User Review

Laptop replacement. Small 4 inch screen can be viewed by usb supported monitor.

Strengths: Snappy performance on par with Pentium M 1.7 mhz laptop. Video performance improved over CES show clip with new OS. Lite, easy to carry, Internet is right there.

Weaknesses: Wish it had x86 chip so I could use one of the 1000s of open source Linux software already out there. Need abiword or similar wp ported over to ARM chip.

Summary: If you go through airport security a lot, you'll appreciate this little guy – saves you from lugging your laptop out. Also has all the web functionality of a laptop without all the bulk. I bought this on a recent vacation where I wanted to leave my laptop at home. If I had had one of these before I left, I wouldn't have brought the laptop with me. Improved video performance with updated OS allows flash and other youtube type videos to play smoothly. AVI format (and others) are supported. In full screen mode it looks like an Archos PVR.

Deviced was designed for the net, the browser is as fast as those running on my laptop. I have a Palm T/X (also an excellent pda) and thought the Nokia N800 would be redundant. Biggest difference between the two products, Palm T/X was designed as a PDA with wireless, N800 was designed as a wireless platform/computer, however much of the PDA type software apps are still being ported over (needs a fullfledged word processor – and it would be nice if my palm keyboard worked with this device also). Opera browser runs far smoother and quicker on N800 (and in multiple instances) than running on the Palm

(Palm's Blazer Browser needs lots of updating). Operating system of N800 is far smoother than Palm's 5.x. More software does exist for Palm though. Can stream Internet audio and video and run movies.

Complaints above about the browser/size of the web page can also be remedied! Set browser to Optimized View and then zoom between 180 and 300 percent (some complex web pages distort at 240 or 300 percent). Simple text pages (a news story) can be viewed properly up to 300 percent. Wish Nokia would allow rotating screen 90 degrees.

Finally, nokia needs to produce a sturdy case for this and do something to enhance the grip (rubber on the back?) to prevent this bad boy from slipping out of my hands. Fantastic speed, sucks up the Internet like a full fledged computer, and open software. Can take 8 gigs (have heard of 16) of memory for movie storage. Next trip I'm taking this guy along and leaving the laptop at home.
